Comparisons

PolyBuzz vs Character.AI vs Janitor AI in 2026, settled.

These three platforms cover almost the entire AI roleplay market and they each made completely different bets. We compare them on what actually matters in 2026: filter, memory, uptime, voice, and the bots themselves.

Three platforms. Three completely different bets on what AI roleplay should be. PolyBuzz wants to be the polished consumer roleplay app. Character.AI wants to be the safest, most-shipped consumer product. Janitor AI wants to be the open hobbyist platform with the deepest catalog. Each one is winning the version of the game it picked. None of them is winning all three.

Quick verdict

  • For casual conversational fiction: Character.AI. Largest catalog, most polished mobile app, strictest filter.
  • For mature roleplay with creative range: Janitor AI when it works, with a backup tab open in case it doesn't.
  • For a Character.AI-style experience with a softer filter: PolyBuzz.
  • If none of these quite fit: Sutorichat is the consumer alternative we built specifically for the gap between "too strict" and "needs a proxy guide".

The three bets, clearly

Character.AI: scale + safety

Character.AI's bet is that the future of AI characters is a real consumer mass-market product, and that means it has to look more like Netflix than like a Discord server. So they hired Trust & Safety, shipped face-scan age verification via Persona, tightened the filter, and put serious effort into mobile.

That bet is correct, and also the reason a chunk of the original community left. If your taste in AI characters skews toward "let me explore something messy with a fictional character", Character.AI is the wrong place for you in 2026.

Janitor AI: open catalog + power users

Janitor AI bet on the opposite. Tiny ops team, massive community-built catalog, BYO model. The result is that Janitor AI is the only mainstream platform where the experience scales with your willingness to set up infrastructure. With a good OpenRouter config, it's incredible. Without one, it's flaky.

PolyBuzz: middle path with shiny features

PolyBuzz tried to take the third path: Character.AI's polish, with a softer filter, plus visual features Character.AI doesn't have ("Live Photos", moments). Voice chat is good. The catalog is diverse, less anime-heavy than Janitor AI, less utility-bot-heavy than old Poly.AI.

How each one actually feels in 2026

Character.AI

It feels like a TV show with a content rating. There are characters you can talk to that you can't quite say things to. The mobile app is gorgeous. The voice mode is the best in the category. The filter is the strictest in the category. If you're 18-22 and using AI characters as a casual entertainment habit, this is probably what you'll use. If you're using them to write or roleplay seriously, you'll bounce.

Janitor AI

It feels like a fan-run bulletin board with a great soul. The characters are wildly more creative than anything Character.AI has, because Janitor AI is mostly "Discord roleplayers, made into a site." When the backend cooperates it is incredible. When it doesn't, you're refreshing.

PolyBuzz

It feels like Character.AI with the safety knob turned down a few clicks, plus more visual ornaments. It's not as creatively diverse as Janitor AI and not as catalog-deep as Character.AI, but it's the most "I want to chat right now without setup or content blocks" option of the three.

Where Sutorichat fits in this map

We built Sutorichat for the gap. The thing the three platforms don't have between them is visual novel scenes that actually update: sprites, expressions, backgrounds, choices, all reacting to the conversation. We took Character.AI's polish, Janitor AI's mature posture (within ethical limits), and added the visual novel layer none of them ship.

If you want one product that replaces all three for everyday use, try us. If you want one product for casual conversational fiction and a separate one for mature roleplay, the honest answer is Character.AI plus Sutorichat in two tabs.
