A short drama is a TV series shrunk to fit a phone. The episodes run about a minute, the picture is vertical, and nearly every episode stops at the exact moment you most want to know what happens next. Put together, a series tells the same kind of story a soap opera would, in the time a single film takes.
The format in one list
- Vertical video. Shot in portrait (9:16), so it fills the screen without turning the phone sideways.
- Very short episodes. Usually one to two minutes, sometimes less.
- Long series. Dozens of episodes, often 50 to 100, so a full show still adds up to one to two hours.
- A hook in every episode. A reveal, a slap, a secret spoken out loud, a door opening on the wrong person. The episode ends there.
- Big, clear stakes. Money, status, revenge and love, stated early and pushed hard, because there is no time for a slow build.
Where short dramas came from
The format grew up in China, where short vertical series (often called duanju) became a major genre on video platforms in the early 2020s. Apps built around the same format then brought it to English speaking audiences, and titles like ReelShort reached the top of the US App Store charts in late 2023. Since then the genre has kept growing, with new studios, new apps and creators filming their own series.
Why people binge them
Short dramas are built around one idea: the next episode should always feel cheaper than stopping. Each episode is so short that watching one more costs almost nothing, and the cliffhanger makes stopping feel expensive. The stories lean on tropes people already love, so there is no time wasted explaining the premise: the secret billionaire, the fated werewolf mate, the betrayed wife who comes back for revenge.
